DAY 12, PRALOGNAN to MODANE/FOURNEAUX
Ascent: 1406 m
Descent: 1739 m
Distance: 29 km
Time on trail: 5:45 – 15:10
The third and last day in the Vanoise National Park would lead me to it’s highest point, Col de Chaviére at 2796m. I wanted to leave as early as possible to get over the col before any risk of afternoon thunderstorms. On my way up I passed by the refuge Roc de la Pêche (1911m) and later refuge de Péclet-Polset (2474m).
After the last refuge I entered the snowfields again. The paths disappeared and going was hard. I wasn’t 100% sure which col would be the right one and dark clouds began to form behind the ridge line.
Fortunately I heard other people and made my way up to the Col de Chaviére (2796m). The last section went through almost waist deep snow and I had to give a good fight to get to the top. I didn’t linger at the col as the sky looked menacing.
The last obstacle of the Stage 3 was to find the campsite in Fourneaux, the town attached to Modane. After some extra kilometers of exhausting urban walking I made it. I felt great and began to feel that I can do this. Things would get slightly easier from now on.
