DAY 22, AURON to REFUGE DE LONGON
Ascent: 1795 m
Descent: 1460 m
Distance: 31 km
Time on trail: 5:30 – 16:40
I was excited to start the sixth and last stage of the GR5. The weather forecast promised lot of rain in the afternoon so I wanted to leave early and hoped to get over the high col before the storm hits.
An old man taking a late morning nap in the village of Roya.
While climbing towards the Col de Crousette (2480m) it became clear that I had lost the race with the rain. Dark clouds reached me and it started to pour water. Closer to the col the visibility dropped but I was able to follow one group in front of me. After the col the rain eased for a while.
After more heavy showers I was pretty wet and tired and decided to overnight at the refuge de Longon. It was only a second time during the whole walk. I didn’t take part for the communal dinner but cooked my own meal before going early to sleep. I felt I was now pretty close to the end. The next day one might even catch a glimpse of the sea!
