DAY 20, LARCHE to BOUSIEYAS
Ascent: 1240 m
Descent: 1035 m
Distance: 21 km
Time on trail: 6:00 – 13:30
After Larche my path entered the Parc National du Mercantour. Again the wild camping was strictly prohibited, as well as feeding already fat marmots. It was early in the morning and no other walkers, just me, marmots and chamoix running freely on the slopes of the valley.
After passing two mountain lakes, the path climbed steeply through loose gravel up to the Pas de la Cavale (2671m).
After the col the path led down to another valley before climbing back up again, to the Col des Fourches (2261m), which was guarded by old concrete casemates. The sky got darker with each step.
I passed by the ruined barracks of Camp des Fourches before descending to a tiny hamlet of Bousieyas, which is the highest hamlet in the Alpes-Maritimes (1883m).
The local gîte d’etape had a small camping ground where I stayed for the night. In the evening it started to pour water. Fortunately there was a cozy terrace to cook and spend time. The next day would be the last of Stage 5 and I was feeling the end drawing near.
(those beers are not mine!)
