DAY 16, VACHETTE to BRUNISSARD
Ascent: 1425 m
Descent: 966 m
Distance: 25 km
Time on trail: 6:30 – 14:30
I walked the last 4km to the city of Briancon along a nice balcony. Just before reaching the city the trail crossed an early 18th-century bridge, which was spanned over a crazy deep gorge.
After so many days in the mountains I felt very uncomfortable walking on the busy streets. I wanted to push through the city as fast as possible.
After a long and strenuous climb I reached the Col des Ayes (2477m), where a hiker was having a nap.
I camped in a forest campsite just before the village of Brunissard and enjoyed a good dinner at a nearby pizzeria. The campsite was lovely but there was a huge amount of flies; some hundred flies were buzzing especially between my inner tent and the flysheet. The only way to get rid of them was to wait until dark and more cold air, and then to release them by taking off the flysheet. I don’t know the behaviour of the flies but this seemed to do the trick. They disappeared together with the setting sun. Maybe they went to disturb the wild boar I heard grunting in the thick forest.
