DAY 15, NEVACHE to VACHETTE
Ascent: 1032 m
Descent: 1244 m
Distance: 28 km
Time on trail: 5:50 – 14:00
I left the valley early and climbed up to chalets des Acles (1870m) before the sun reached ridge line and the shadows retreated. The day got hotter with each step towards the high cols.
I passed by gentle grassy slopes, perfect for camping, before reaching Col de Dormillouse (2445m) and Col de la Lauze (2529m) 30 minutes after the first one.
After two hours of descending I got the village of Montgenèvre on my sight. The place has a rich military history as great emperors have marched their armies through it but now it looked just like a luxurious winter resort.
I walked straight through it and found a narrow trail leading towards the big city of Briancon. After an hour of walking I came to a path junction; Briancon 4km and Vachette 10 minutes off trail. I chose the latter as Vachette has a good campsite.
The tiny village had not even a store to buy supplies but it had a great restaurant owned by a friendly british couple, http://www.la-vieille-ecurie.com/. I enjoyed a big and tasty portion of tartiflette, just what a tired body needed after a long day!
