DAY 9, LA GRANDE BERGE to LANDRY
Ascent: 905 m
Descent: 2100 m
Distance: 27 km
Time on trail: 5:50 – 14:30
An early start towards Col du Bresson (2469m). The northern side of the col was snowy and very heavy to ascent but I was fortunate to meet a local guy who was going fishing up there. Together we pushed ourselves steadily through soft snow and between huge boulders. The air was cool as we were climbing in the shadow side of the mountains.
Feeling happy at the col, seeing less snow on the southern side slopes.
The campsite of Landry was empty but I had a good stay and enjoyed the end of Stage 2. I was patient enough and waited until 7pm to get a dinner in a restaurant for the first time. The first beer of the hike tasted AMAZING!
I spent good amount of time with the guidebook and maps. I had to make tough desicisions as I was about to enter the famous Vanoise National Park. My initial plan was to go straight through the park following the GR55 variant whereas the GR5 would circle around it taking several days longer. My concern though was now the high altitude of the GR55 (snow and more snow) and prohibition of any kind of bivouac. The distance to Modane, to the end of the next stage, was about 90km and would take usually four days. I began to think if I could make it in three very long days…
